Acupuncture – Getting to the Point
by Jason Johnston
Originating in Ancient China, acupuncture is an alternative medicine methodology that treats patients by manipulating thin, solid needles which have been inserted into acupuncture points in the skin. This therapy dates back more than 3,000 years and is commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chiropractic and Physiotherapy clinics, as well as Natural Wellness centres.
The acupuncture process, cited as painless by most, involves inserting very fine needles into the meridians of your body which represent the various organs of the body, including your heart, stomach and kidneys. More than 350 points across these 12 meridians aim to balance energy and blood in the body. This traditional approach has been modernized by Western Culture, which takes an anatomical approach to acupuncture, incorporating what we know of human physiology, anatomy and pathophysiology (the branch of medicine which deals with any disturbances of body functions, caused by disease or prodromal symptoms.
Acupuncture is used to activate endorphins, your body’s natural pain killers, to decrease pain. The endorphins essentially block the pain signal to the brain, while reducing inflammation, allowing the body an opportunity to undergo physical therapy and heal with little discomfort. The acupuncture treatment requires little time to undergo, generally 15-30 minutes, and can be quite relaxing. In my own experience, it has led to some excellent naps and great sleeps.
Some of the conditions which acupuncture assists with include arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, general fatigue, chronic pain, headaches/migraines, fibromyalgia, menstrual cramps, myofascial pain, low back pain, neck pain, tennis elbow and muscle aches and pain.
